Eugenio Oñate, interviewed by ‘Full dels Enginyers’
Entrevista Full Enginyers

Recently, the Director of CIMNE, Eugenio Oñate, has been interviewed by ‘Fulls dels Enginyers’, the journal of the industrial engineers of Catalonia (Spain). Issues such as the research projects of CIMNE, the application fields of the numerical methods, the trends in innovation and research or the technology transfer and the role of the universities were addressed in the interview.

Eugenio Oñate, professor of Structural Mechanics in the UPC · BarcelonaTech, founded the International Center for Numerical Methods in Engineering (CIMNE) in 1987, where nowadays are working 230 researchers from 25 countries. The numerical methods, according to his own words, “have been traditionally related to the prediction of the behaviours of the structures in a broad sense […] After it has been applied to the study of the fluid dynamics and the problems where converge the fluids and the structures, in other words, all the manufacturing processes”. On his point of view, “the university develops its paper as incubator of ideas […] But after the prototype requires an investment to transform it in a commercial product”.
